To file indigent, meaning you don't have enough money to pay the fee, you need to collect one registered voter's signature for every filing fee dollar. For safety's sake, you will need to collect 35 - 50% more signatures than whatever number is required for each office. For instance, State Legislators are paid a salary of $32,801/yr. The filing fee is 1% of that. So we have a filing fee of $328.01. Technically you'll only need 329 signatures but you shouldn't file with any less than 444 to 494 signatures. Just to make sure you don't miss the filing due to rejected signatures.

Filling fees for US offices are $1,500. you'll need at least 2,000 - 2,200 signatures.

For back-up, we suggest asking for a dollar along with the signature.
That way you can increase your funding, get used to asking for money, and you don't have to worry about whether or not you have enough signatures. BUT don't give the person you file with a choice if you believe you have enough signatures. They'll take the money instead and you won't be considered indigent. Only give them money if you feel you haven't met the quota.

Voters lists pay off!   If you have them, you should be able to verify  signatures before you file.
